There is a reason so many people dream about visiting the Gili Islands.
Warm turquoise water, white beaches, colorful coral reefs — and of course, turtles.
One of the most magical things about the Gilis is that you do not need to be a scuba diver to experience marine life here. It does help though for some really close up entcounters.. LOL. BUT Some of the best turtle encounters happen just a few meters from shore with nothing more than a mask, snorkel, and a little patience.
And honestly, the first time you see a turtle underwater never gets old.
They move through the ocean so calmly that everything around you seems to slow down for a moment. Even people who feel nervous in the water usually forget about it completely once a turtle glides past them.
The best part is that each Gili Island has its own special snorkeling spots.
Gili Trawangan: Halik Reef
Gili Trawangan is usually known for beach bars and nightlife, but the snorkeling on the island can actually be incredible — especially in the north.
Halik Reef, located off the northwestern side of the island, is one of the best snorkeling spots in the Gilis for seeing turtles in clear blue water.
The reef here feels healthier and less crowded than many of the central snorkeling areas around the island. Large coral formations, schools of reef fish, and regular turtle sightings make it worth swimming a little farther from the beach.
The water is often beautifully clear in the mornings, and turtles are commonly spotted feeding along the reef edge or resting peacefully near the coral.
What makes Halik Reef special is the feeling of space. Once you move slightly away from the busier parts of Trawangan, the snorkeling suddenly becomes calm and surprisingly peaceful.
Gili Meno: West Side & Bask Nest
If there is one island truly famous for turtles, it is Gili Meno.
The west and north-west side of the island offers some of the most reliable turtle encounters anywhere in Indonesia. It is not unusual to see several turtles during a single snorkel session, especially in the calmer morning hours.
The reef here is shallow, colorful, and very accessible directly from the beach. This makes it perfect even for beginners or less confident swimmers.
One of the highlights is the famous Bask Nest underwater statues, where snorkeling feels almost surreal. Floating above the underwater sculptures while turtles move through the surrounding reef creates one of those travel moments people never really forget.
The combination of calm water, white sand, healthy coral, and abundant turtle life is exactly why so many travelers end up falling in love with Gili Meno.
At Divine Divers Gili Meno, many guests start with snorkeling before eventually deciding to try scuba diving after realizing how incredible the underwater world around Meno actually is.
Gili Air: The Northeast Tip
Gili Air has a slightly different atmosphere from the other two islands. It is quieter than Trawangan but more lively than Meno. Nice restaurants and a lively community draw people in from all over the world. However, it has seen massive buildup during the past few years.
For snorkeling, the northeast tip of the island is one of the best areas to explore. The reef isn’t as far from the shore that all along the west coast of Gili Air.
The reef here has beautiful shallow coral gardens mixed with sandy patches where turtles are often seen surfacing for air. Because the water remains relatively calm in this area, it is also excellent for relaxed snorkeling sessions without strong currents.
Respecting the Turtles
One thing that makes the Gili Islands so unique is how close these turtle encounters feel. But that also comes with responsibility.
The best turtle experiences happen when people stay calm, keep a respectful distance, and allow the animals to behave naturally. Chasing turtles, touching them, or blocking their path can create stress for the animals even if people do not realize it.
The Magic of Snorkeling in the Gilis
Snorkeling with turtles in the Gili Islands is one of those experiences that feels surprisingly emotional.
Maybe it is because the ocean suddenly feels alive in a completely different way. Or maybe it is because turtles move through the water with a kind of calmness most people wish they had themselves.
Either way, it is the reason many travelers arrive planning to stay for a few days and somehow end up extending their trip instead.
