Gili Meno

Introduction to Gili Meno

Gili Meno is known for its relaxed atmosphere and serene beauty, offering a peaceful escape from the livelier neighboring islands. As the smallest and quietest of the three Gili Islands, Meno is often considered the most idyllic. Many visitors even argue that it has the best beaches of the entire archipelago — long stretches of white sand dotted with swaying palm trees and surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise water.

A Small Island with a Peaceful Community

Unlike the more developed islands nearby, Gili Meno has remained largely untouched. With a local population of only around 300 residents, the island maintains a calm and intimate character that immediately makes visitors feel far removed from the busy pace of everyday life.

The interior of the island is mostly made up of palm groves and open grassy areas. Cows often graze lazily in the shade, helping to keep the grass trimmed while adding to the island’s slow and peaceful rhythm.

The Main Village and Harbour

The main village is located on the eastern side of Gili Meno. Here you will find the island’s small harbour where boats arrive and depart, along with a handful of accommodation options, small local shops, and several doctors’ clinics that serve both residents and visitors.

Although the village is modest in size, it provides the essential services needed for a comfortable island stay.

Sunset Beach and Divine Divers

On the northwest side of the island lies Sunset Beach, where the Gili Meno dive center Divine Divers is based. This area is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful parts of the island.

The beach here faces west toward Bali, offering spectacular sunset views where the sky glows with deep orange and pink hues as the sun disappears behind the ocean. The atmosphere is peaceful and uncrowded, making it the perfect place to relax after a day of diving or snorkeling.

Restaurants, Accommodation and Island Life

Despite its small size, Gili Meno offers a variety of restaurants, guesthouses, and boutique hotels scattered around the island. Fresh seafood is a highlight at many of the beachfront restaurants, where visitors can enjoy grilled fish and local Indonesian dishes while sitting just meters from the ocean.

Some of the charming beach bars occasionally host live music, creating a relaxed and social atmosphere without disturbing the island’s overall tranquility.

Snorkeling and the Famous Bask Nest Sculptures

One of Gili Meno’s biggest attractions lies just beneath the surface of its surrounding waters. The island is famous for its excellent snorkeling spots, including the well-known “Bask Nest” underwater sculpture installation.

Created by internationally recognized artist Jason deCaires Taylor, the installation consists of 48 life-sized human figures arranged in a circular formation on the seabed. Over time, coral has begun to grow on the sculptures, transforming them into an evolving artificial reef that attracts fish and marine life.

Turtle Conservation on Gili Meno

Not far from Divine Divers on the southeastern side of the island, visitors can also find a small turtle nursery run by local conservationists. Here, baby sea turtles are cared for and protected until they are about eight months old.

At this stage they are strong enough to survive in the ocean and are then released back into the wild. Visitors can support the project financially and sometimes even help feed the turtles.

Getting Around the Island

Another feature that defines life on Gili Meno is the absence of motorized vehicles. Cars and scooters are not allowed anywhere on the island, preserving its quiet and relaxed atmosphere.

The main forms of transportation are bicycles, walking, and traditional horse-drawn carts known as cidomos.

What to Do on Gili Meno

Aside from scuba diving and snorkeling in the island’s warm, crystal-clear waters, there isn’t much else competing for your attention — and that’s exactly the charm of Gili Meno.

Days are best spent swimming, exploring coral reefs, cycling along sandy paths, or simply relaxing on its peaceful and secluded beaches.
