At Divine Divers Gili Meno, we regularly guide first-time divers and new PADI students around the islands. Some dive sites are especially beginner-friendly because they combine easy conditions with unforgettable underwater scenery.
Here are our four favorite dive sites on the Gili Islands for beginners:
Turtle City - Gili Meno
The name already says everything.
Turtle City, also known as Turtle Heaven is one of the most famous dive sites in the Gili Islands, and for good reason. If you are hoping to see sea turtles during your first dives, this is probably the best place to start.
Located on the northern side of Gili Meno, the site offers gentle slopes, sandy patches, and beautiful coral gardens filled with marine life. Conditions are usually calm, making it ideal for beginner divers and students completing their Open Water Course.
What makes Turtle Heaven so special is how relaxed the turtles are. Green turtles and hawksbill turtles are commonly seen resting on the reef, swimming slowly through the coral, or surfacing for air nearby. For many new divers, this becomes the moment they truly fall in love with scuba diving.
The site is also home to:

- colorful coral formations

Because the dive is relatively shallow and easy to navigate, beginners can relax and fully enjoy the experience without feeling overwhelmed.
Meno Wall - Gili Meno
Another fantastic beginner dive site around Gili Meno is Meno Wall.
Despite the name, this is not a dramatic deep wall dive like you might find in other parts of Indonesia. Instead, Meno Wall offers a gentle reef wall covered with soft corals, sponges, and marine life at comfortable beginner depths.
One of the reasons instructors love bringing new divers here is the variety of underwater life packed into a relatively calm environment. Beginners can slowly drift alongside the reef while spotting turtles, angelfish, pufferfish, nudibranchs, and sometimes even reef sharks in the distance.
The site also has excellent visibility on many days, which helps new divers feel more comfortable underwater. Sunlight shining through the clear blue water creates beautiful colors across the reef, making every dive feel almost unreal.
For underwater photographers, Meno Wall is also a fantastic place to practice because marine life is abundant and easy to observe without strong currents.
Halik Reef - Gili Trawangan
Halik Reef is often considered one of the healthiest coral reefs in the Gili Islands and is another excellent site for beginner divers.
Located near Gili Trawangan, Halik Reef combines colorful coral gardens with calm conditions and shallow depths, making it ideal for relaxed diving.
What beginners often love most about Halik Reef is the feeling of floating above endless coral formations filled with life. Schools of reef fish move through the corals while turtles frequently cruise by in the background.
The reef is healthy, vibrant, and full of movement, but the dive itself remains easy and enjoyable for newer divers.
Depending on the conditions, divers may also spot:
- reef sharks (very likely)
- octopus
- trumpetfish
- giant moray eels
Bounty Wreck — Gili Meno
For beginners who want to try their first wreck dive, Bounty Wreck is a fantastic introduction.
The wreck lies in relatively shallow water near Gili Meno and has transformed into an artificial reef covered in coral and marine life. Unlike large deep shipwrecks that require advanced training, Bounty Wreck is accessible, easy to explore, and very suitable for beginner divers.
The wreck attracts huge schools of fish and offers plenty of opportunities to discover marine life hiding among the structure. Glassfish often shimmer around the wreck while lionfish, moray eels, scorpionfish, and turtles are regularly spotted nearby.
For many beginner divers, exploring a wreck for the first time feels like a real underwater adventure. The site combines the excitement of wreck diving with the calm conditions and warm water that make the Gili Islands so beginner-friendly.
Because the wreck is relatively small and shallow, it allows new divers to experience wreck diving without stress or complicated navigation.
