When divers think about Turbo, they usually think about Deep Turbo.
Strong currents.
Deep ridges.
But just a little shallower lies a beautiful and diverse dive site in the Gili Islands.
Shallow Turbo.
Also known as Basket Coral Garden, this dive site combines crystal-clear water, healthy coral gardens, excellent macro life and exciting shark encounters into one unforgettable dive.
Whether you enjoy underwater photography, colourful coral reefs or simply relaxed drifting through tropical waters, Shallow Turbo has something for everyone.
Where Is Shallow Turbo?
Shallow Turbo sits on the north-eastern corner of Gili Trawangan, just west of Deep Turbo and close to Halik.
Depending on the current, it can connect beautifully with neighbouring dive sites, allowing for longer drift dives.
Its location outside the channel means visibility is often outstanding, especially during the dry season.
Before you even enter the water, you can usually see schools of redtooth triggerfish swimming beneath the boat in the crystal-clear blue water.
It is the perfect start to the dive.
Beginning in the Shallows
The dive normally begins over a sandy bottom at around five metres.
Almost immediately the reef comes alive.
Beautiful hard corals cover the shallow reef.
Large basket corals give the site its alternative name.
Big barrel sponges add texture and colour.
Sunlight dances across the reef, making this one of the most colourful shallow dives in the Gili Islands.
The first few minutes alone often convince divers that this site deserves far more attention than it receives.
A Reef Full of Colour
The shallow reef is exceptionally healthy.
Colourful coral bommies provide shelter for countless reef fish.
Anemones sway gently in the current.
Mantis shrimp hide amongst the rubble.
Leaf scorpionfish blend perfectly into the reef.
For photographers, it is difficult not to become distracted every few metres.
Macro Paradise
Although Shallow Turbo is famous for its shallow coral gardens, it is equally rewarding for divers who enjoy searching for smaller marine life.
Look carefully amongst the coral blocks and sandy patches and you may discover:
- Ribbon eels
- Leaf scorpionfish
- Mantis shrimp
- Nudibranchs
- Cleaner shrimp
- Pipefish
- Octopus
The combination of healthy coral and sandy habitat creates excellent conditions for macro photography.
Patience is usually rewarded.
Exploring the Deeper Reef
Beyond the shallow reef, the dive changes character.
Between the coral gardens lie sandy areas with scattered coral blocks.ย
Around 18 metres, larger coral formations begin appearing again.
The marine life here often surprises divers who expected the sandy sections to be less interesting.
A Reminder of the Past
Continuing further wet, divers reach a broad area of coral rubble.
This section is believed to be the result of historic dynamite fishing before marine protection became established around the Gili Islands.
Although the reef here is still recovering, nature has slowly reclaimed some of the area.
Ribbon eels frequently emerge from the sand.
Small macro creatures have made the rubble their home.
It serves as both a reminder of the reef’s past and an encouraging example of how marine ecosystems can recover when they are protected.
The Connection to Deep Turbo
From the rubble field, divers have an important decision to make.
Stay deep.
Or return to the shallows.
Experienced divers sometimes continue towards an impressive drop-off at around 24 metres.
Here the reef suddenly falls away into deep blue water, descending beyond recreational diving depths.
This dramatic wall also marks the connection between Shallow Turbo and Deep Turbo.
The scenery changes instantly.
The reef becomes more exposed.
The blue becomes darker.
Returning to the Coral Wall
Divers who choose to remain shallower are rewarded with one of the most beautiful sections of the dive.
A colourful mini coral wall stretches westwards.
Many guides compare it to the healthy coral walls found at Halik.
The wall is full of life.
White-tip reef sharks are often found resting inside small caves beneath coral overhangs.
Soft corals, sponges and colourful reef fish create an almost aquarium-like landscape.
It is one of the highlights of the entire dive.
Finishing in an Underwater Aquarium
The final part of the dive returns to the shallow reef.
Here the coral becomes healthier again.
Schools of reef fish weave through the coral gardens.
Anemones cover the reef.
Butterflyfish, angelfish and surgeonfish seem to appear in every direction.
The combination of crystal-clear water and vibrant coral creates an underwater scene that feels almost unreal.
It is a wonderful place to complete a safety stop while enjoying one last look at the reef.
Diving Conditions
Shallow Turbo is generally suitable for divers of many experience levels.
The shallow reef is calm and easy to explore.
Experienced divers can extend the dive towards the deeper drop-off if conditions allow.
Because the site lies on the north-eastern corner of Gili Trawangan, currents can occasionally become stronger.
During August and September, stronger tidal currents sometimes push divers away from the reef.
When this happens, experienced guides simply adapt the dive.
Instead of fighting the current, the dive often continues as a relaxed drift towards Halik or Trawangan Slope (Goodheart), turning changing conditions into another enjoyable underwater adventure.
