But few people stop to think about the corals themselves.
Some of the coral colonies you swim past today may already have been alive hundreds of years ago.

Corals are among the oldest living animals on Earth.

Why Age Matters
Older coral colonies are incredibly valuable.
Large colonies produce enormous numbers of eggs and sperm during annual coral spawning events.
Because they have survived for centuries, they also carry valuable genetic traits that may help future generations adapt to changing environmental conditions.
Losing one ancient coral colony is about much more than losing a beautiful underwater landmark.
It means losing centuries of growth and one of the reef’s most productive breeding colonies.
Ancient Corals Face Modern Threats
Unfortunately, living for centuries does not make corals indestructible.
Ancient colonies remain vulnerable to:

- Pollution

How Scientists Estimate a Coral’s Age
Unlike trees, corals do not come with a visible birthday.
Scientists estimate age using several methods.
They measure growth rates.
Study internal growth bands.
Take small core samples from massive colonies.
And compare different species.
Although exact ages are difficult to determine, researchers can often estimate how old large colonies are with surprising accuracy.
A Different Way to Look at the Reef
The next time you descend onto a coral reef, pause for a moment.
Instead of immediately searching for turtles or sharks, look at the largest coral colonies around you.
Imagine how many storms they have survived.
How many spawning events they have participated in.
How many generations of fish have used them as shelter.
You are not simply looking at coral.
You are looking at living history.
